Alcohol and Drug Council
The Alcohol and Drug Council is a private
non-profit program under the auspices of the Family Intervention Center serving the
thirteen-town region in the Central Naugatuck Valley. We are funded, in part, by the
Connecticut Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission (CADAC) to provide education and community
awareness about alcohol and drug use and abuse.
Our Philosophy...
Addiction is a progressive family disease that is preventable and treatable.
We Provide...
Information and Referral about alcohol, drugs, community resources,
legislation, effective programs, and school curriculum for area-wide students, families,
helping professionals and the general population.
Speakers for civic groups,
churches, and schools to heighten the awareness of the use and misuse of alcohol and
drugs.
Inservice training for social
service agencies, churches, and helping professionals.
Prevention education for
youngsters, school personnel, industry, and churches.
Training and Consultation for social service staff, therapists, volunteers,
school personnel, business and industry, medical staff, and other helping professionals.
Resources through our Resource
Center.

Forces and Advisory Boards.
AIDS Risk Reduction Outreach Workers (ARROWS)
provide street outreach to I.V. drug users and their sex partners.
Community Youth Activities Project
This three year project, funded through CADAC, offers planning, coordination and
prevention education to agencies, schools and organizations to empower them to provide
services for high-risk youth of elementary school age in Waterbury. A heavy emphasis is
put on afterschool activities and parent involvement.
Parenting Classes
We offer the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP), STEP Teen, Developing
Capable Young People and STEP for Children Under Six parenting classes on a continuing
basis.
Natural Peer Helper Program
Training students who have been identified as "natural" helpers in middle
schools and high schools to enable them to help other students. It is based upon the
premise that most kids seek advice from their friends first. The training equips the
"Helpers" with the necessary information to use resources and make referrals.
Life Skills Program
A twelve session program for high school and middle school students designed to teach
decision-making, coping, self esteem, understanding relationships, sexuality, and ways to
handle stress.
AIDS Risk Reduction Outreach Workers
ARROWs provide prevention education and outreach to I.V. drug users and their sex
partners. They attempt, through education, to help them change risky behaviors in an
effort to control the spread of H.I.V.
For more information about our Prevention Programs, please call the agency and ask to
speak to the Prevention Staff. The number is (203) 753-5490.
