Counseling Center
The Counseling Center is a private, non-profit outpatient treatment
program under the auspices of the Family Intervention Center. We are licensed as an adult
psychiatric outpatient clinic under the Connecticut Department of Health Services. Clients
are referred by physicians, family, friends, employers, hospitals, outpatient agencies,
clergy or by themselves. Treatment is covered by most health plans. We also accept
Medicaid (Title #19) and City Welfare.
Our Philosophy...
Members of healthy nurturing families
acknowledge their feelings and deal with them directly and constructively. Each member has
a growing sense of self-worth. In hurting families, one or more of the individuals is in
unmanageable stress. Feelings become confused and people act out in ways which create
further problems and discomfort. Without intervention, problems become progressively
worse. The earlier intervention occurs, the greater the chance for recovery and for the
prevention of further deterioration. Our goal, in working with people, is to assist them
in making healthy choices and to help them reach their potentials. [BACK]

Family Forum
The Family Forum is a five week educational
counseling program for relatives, friends and others concerned about someone who drinks
and / or drugs too much. The purpose of the Family Forum is to help people understand how
they are affected by chemical dependency and how they can begin to bring about changes in
their own lives. [BACK]
Planned Interventions
Planned Interventions are a series of sessions with
the important people in a chemically dependent person's life for the purpose of
intervening in the cycle of addiction. The goal is to move the chemically dependent person
into treatment. [BACK]
Children of Alcoholics Support Group
Provides support for children between the ages of
seven and twelve who have been living in a home where one or both parents abuses alcohol
or other drugs. It provides them with a safe place to talk about things they have found
dffficult and, in some cases, impossible to talk about elsewhere. We use art, music, role
play, and other structured activities to enable them to cope with their co-dependency. [BACK]
Adult Children of Alcoholics
Provides long-term therapy to enable ACOA clients to
identify the feelings and behaviors that interfere with their ability to manage their
adult lives. They learn to recognize, accept, share and in some cases alter their feelings
and behaviors in order to break free of their co-dependency. We encourage them to become
involved in twelve-step work and use self-help programs for ongoing support. [BACK]
Co-Dependent Support Groups
Provides support and ongoing group therapy for those
people who exhibit co-dependency behaviors. The therapy is designed to enhance their
communication skills and develop better ways to handle their lives, thereby improving
their interpersonal relationships as well as their intrapersonal relationship.
Clients are encouraged to attend regular self-help meetings for ongoing support and
continued wellness. [BACK]
Chemical Dependency Groups
Provides open-ended therapy for those people who are
chemically dependent and are attempting to maintain sobriety. We advocate active, ongoing
participation in a twelve-step, self-help program. [BACK]
Continuing Care Groups
Provides twelve weeks of continuing care for those
people coming out of an inpatient treatment setting. We contract with several private
treatment centers to provide continuing care for their patients who are unable to attend
the sessions provided at the treatment location. Ongoing attendance at a self-help program
is mandated. [BACK]
