That is the main reason that "Bigs" volunteer their time. They want to establish
themselves as a stable, supportive friend...and that is the same reason Little Brothers
and Little Sisters come to us...establishing friendships!
Does it Work?
It sure does!
We see it happen day in and day out with our
"matches".
A recent large scale, scientific study conducted by
Public/Private Ventures the renowned Research Organization found that Little Brothers and
Sisters who met regularly with their "Bigs" were:
46% less likely than their peers to start using illegal
drugs
minority "littles" were 70% less likely to start
using illegal drugs
27% less likely to start drinking
52% less likely to skip a day at school than their peers
32% less likely to skip a class
Yes! It works for "bigs" and
"littles"!
A large number of matches endure for years beyond the
one year requirement.
Why Does it Work?
The core of our success lies in the process we use to
obtain the best match for Bigs and Littles.
We use a screening process that is candid, thorough, and
satisfying for Bigs and Littles. This
will insure the greatest chance for a stable, supportive friendship to develop naturally
- not forced.
We explore all life styles and experiences in order to make
sure they will positively affect the volunteer experience for Bigs
and Littles.
We support the match and developing relationship with a
professional staff that is ready to answer questions and act as a resource when needed.
It Works Because...
Littles want to participate
because they recognize the need for a friend...
Parents want their child to
participate because they see the benefits...
Bigs want to participate so that
they can make a difference in a child's life...they all win!

Our Programs:
Core Program -
matches children who demonstrate a need for services, with mentors who meet on a regular
basis to develop a stable supportive relationship. A Core Couples match brings an
adult couple together with a child in order to allow the child to experience a healthy,
loving relationship between couples.
The Professionals Program
- is designed to provide a busy professional who would like the opportunity to mentor a
child in a specialized setting. Screening, assessment, and one year requirement are the
same as the core program, with a minimum of 4-6 hours per month and phone contact in
between.
Adopt a Grandparent
- is a community service option for matches who choose to mentor with a senior in a
continuing care facility.
"When I
first decided to be Josh's Big Brother I thought I was primarily doing something for him.
Now I know I was doing something for me. I have a nice "time out" from the
pressures of my adult world by again entering the wondrous, but challenging world of
childhood. There is something to be said for sharing a grinder and an orange soda with a
12 year old, in a park, talking about Apollo 13 and the perils of 7th grade. A something
that I had forgotten about. Thanks Josh."
